I’m excited to share my latest blog post on eco-friendly pest control. Discover how this sustainable solution enhances our offerings and benefits you.
The short answer is that they should always aim to be as eco-friendly as possible and only resort to other methods when absolutely necessary.
Sadly, we live in what I call the "Macca’s factor," where customers expect an instant fix when handing over their money. Most eco pest control methods involve using a variety of approaches to eliminate the problem, which can sometimes take days or weeks.
It’s a great question, and it’s important to understand the outcomes and how they affect both of us and our environment.
There’s no point in implementing a treatment if certain factors are reintroducing the problem.
For example, with a cockroach treatment using non-toxic bait:
If dishes remain unwashed and sit in the sink all day (or longer), the cockroaches will go for the dirty dishes every time.
This has been their behaviour up until the day the treatment starts.
As a result, the bait will remain untouched and ineffective.
Educating the household to wash up can make all the difference. It’s a simple fix, but you’d be surprised how often this needs to be addressed.
Sometimes, chemicals may not be an option at all. For example:
A household may have a pregnant resident.
Young children might be present.
The customer may prefer not to use chemicals altogether.
The great news is that there are fantastic eco-friendly alternatives.
For instance:
Pantry Moths: Keeping rice and spices in sealable plastic containers and using non-toxic moth traps can attract and capture the flying moths over time.
This method is not instant, but it is very low-risk and doesn’t require a single drop of chemicals.
A good pest technician not only carries out the treatment but also advises on what you can do to help.
This could involve:
Removing storage placed beside your home, as pests such as bugs, spiders (especially redbacks), and rats/mice love hiding in these areas.
Improving food storage inside your home and maintaining good hygiene practices.
Before starting treatment, your pest technician will:
Inspect your home
Ask questions
Discuss solutions with you
These solutions may involve eco-friendly methods, chemical treatments, or a combination of both.
Getting customer buy-in is always a priority. I see the customer as a partner in every treatment I perform.
Sometimes, the solution might be simple, such as blocking a hole in your home to prevent rats from entering.
Other times, it could involve live trapping rats and mice.
Natural sprays can also be used to flush out bugs, spiders, and ants, but it’s important to note that these sprays don’t last as long as traditional chemicals.
